Frequently asked questions
Is the sales tax calculator free?
Yes. The sales tax calculator is 100% free with no limits, no watermark and no paid tier.

Yes. Use Save results in the Free forever box to download your inputs and results as PDF, Excel (.xlsx) or CSV, or tap Send to phone to share them as a plain-text note (share sheet, copy, .txt file or QR code). Files are created in your browser and include the date generated.
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the taxable amount by the rate. At 8.25%, tax on $100.00 is $100.00 × 0.0825 = $8.25, so the total is $108.25.
How do I take sales tax out of a total (reverse sales tax)?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. For a $108.25 total at 8.25%: $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.00 before tax, so the tax was $8.25.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska lets local governments charge one, averaging about 1.82%.
Are these the exact rates for my city?
No. The state rate is exact, but the local figure is a population-weighted average from the Tax Foundation (as of July 1, 2026). Local rates vary by city, county and district, so use "My exact rate" with the rate from your receipt or state revenue department when you need to be precise.
Where do the rates come from?
State and average local rates come from the Tax Foundation, "2026 Sales Tax Rates, Midyear Update" (rates as of July 1, 2026). Tax rules on what is taxable (food, clothing, services) also differ by state.
